A Day at Walleye University 2026: What We Saw, Learned, and Bought More Than We Planned
Every now and then you get the chance to actually improve your fishing skills instead of just blaming the wind, the waves, or “they just weren’t biting.”
Walleye University 2026—put on by the Erie PA Charter Boat Association (EPACBA)—was exactly that opportunity.
So naturally, we showed up ready to learn… and immediately got distracted by tackle.
First Impressions: “Yeah, We’re in the Right Place”
You walk in and instantly know this isn’t your average fishing seminar. The room is full of serious anglers, charter captains, and guys who look like they haven’t made a bad trolling decision since 2008.
Meanwhile, we’re over here like, “So… how many rods is too many to run again?”
The Classes: Where You Realize You’ve Been Doing Things… Questionably
The speakers were top-notch. These are guys who spend more time on Lake Erie than most of us spend thinking about going fishing.
And within about 15 minutes, we had a pretty humbling realization:
We’ve been catching fish… but we’ve also been doing a lot of things the hard way.
Speed Matters (More Than We Wanted to Admit)
Turns out “somewhere around 2 mph-ish” is not a precise fishing strategy.
The level of detail these guys go into—adjusting speed by tenths, changing direction slightly, fine-tuning everything—was eye-opening. Apparently, walleyes are a little pickier than we give them credit for.
Color Choices: It’s Not Just “Grab Something That Looks Cool”
There’s actual reasoning behind color selection based on water clarity, light conditions, and depth.
Who knew?
(Definitely not us when we bought half our tackle based on “that one looks fishy.”)
Keep It Simple… Seriously
This one came up a lot. The pros run clean, controlled spreads and adjust based on what’s working.
Meanwhile, we’ve definitely had days where it looked like we were trying to troll with every lure we own just to “see what happens.”
The Tackle Expo: Where Financial Discipline Goes to Die
Let’s talk about the real challenge of the day—the tackle expo.
You go in telling yourself:
“I’m just going to look around.”
Next thing you know, you’re having deep conversations about blade colors, picking up custom harnesses, and convincing yourself that you definitely needed more spoons.
And the best part? Talking directly with the vendors and charter guys who actually use this stuff every day. You get tips, tricks, and probably a few justifications for why buying more gear was the right decision.
The People: Easily the Best Part
One of the coolest things about Walleye University is the crowd.
You’ve got seasoned captains, weekend warriors, and guys who are just getting started—all swapping stories, sharing tips, and laughing about the ones that got away (or the ones we definitely should have caught).
Nobody’s guarding secrets. Everyone’s there to learn and help each other out.
Final Thoughts: Worth Every Minute (and Dollar… Unfortunately)
We showed up hoping to pick up a few tips.
We left with:
A notebook full of ideas
A brain full of “we should probably try that”
And a tackle stash that somehow grew significantly in a matter of hours
Walleye University 2026 absolutely delivered. It was equal parts classroom, tackle show, and reality check—in the best way possible.
Now comes the real challenge:
Actually applying what we learned… instead of going right back to “Eh, let’s just run what worked last year.”
